It is said, “Beauty is in the eye of the beholder.” I say, sometimes the critical beholder has short-changed the beheld for having not had the opportunity to ogle the object properly framed. For me, there is something grand hidden – if it is not obvious – everywhere, all around me, every day. My affinity for photography stems from this very notion. I am a traveler and an explorer, and as such, I have witnessed many glorious landscapes both tame and wild, I have viewed many impressive cityscapes, and I have surveyed remote and rural lands. The big things are easy to take notice of: who hasn’t been held in the awe inspiring grip of some scenic mountain-scape, each peak trailing off to meet the splendor of Sol setting upon the horizon; or who hasn’t seen from afar, the brilliance of the dancing city lights mirroring the magnificence of the moon-lit and star studded endless expanse above? I’ve narrowed the selected photographs down from over one thousand images. Each was taken over the course of a four week period in the summer of 2011. Although it was never my intention to pair or marry any of these photographs from the many random and unrelated excursions I had gone on, catching up on the processing of a number of images I had previously overlooked, forced me into a review of all my work. The visual impact of the images contained within each frame, while grouped together before me, started to “speak” to me. During my assessment, a particular frame would appear to me as if in some way “related” to another; where I had never any intent as to their sharing such a kinship. Interested in this tension created when certain images were fitted together, I felt the sense of contrast heightened the impact of each individually, as well as when viewed together as one piece. Visually, some photographs seemed to be highlighting or enhancing their partner, others felt more like interlocking puzzle pieces. A few gave the feeling of a continuation of space, and yet some spoke of each other on a more existential level; either comparatively or by contrast: "Visual contrast identifies where everything meets everything else. It catches our attention and points to the interface, the place where merging and interdependence happen, amongst other things, contrast depicts change and influence. Contrast represents the most fundamental of relations within the visual world. . . . Perception differs when objects are seen in relationship, rather than within a kind of perceptual isolation. . . . If we legitimize and practice a relational view, we act in response to a world that reveals forces and vibrancy, one that appears dynamic, and by extension, alive. This practice allows for our own engagement. We may find ourselves being 'part of,' or 'in relationship with.'" -Laura Sewall
